Irish A/V artist ALYXIS explores themes of loneliness, anxiety with a AI chatbot on ‘Lucky’
Sal Stapleton’s Alyxis project has returned.
Formerly known as Bad Bones, the non-binary artist has pivoted to ALYXIS, a project that deeply explores the space between experimental electronic music and visual art.
ALYXIS is informed by the character being a non-binary entity that lives in XOIOXO, a digital ecosystem seen in the visuals. ALYXIS last featured here in 2022 with an EP, featuring a CMAT co-write and ELLLL remix.
‘Lucky’ is the latest audio and visual missive, that “explores themes of loneliness, anxiety and search for solace in the modern world.”
“The song explores the human tendency to seek temporary relief and a sense of security through various means such as mindfulness apps, podcasts, and similar digital resources.”
The self-created video using Cinema 4D, Blender and Unreal engine reflects this by “examining the possibility of accessing such solace through an AI chatbot from XOIOXO called Oracle—an entity that presents itself as a reassuring voice, guiding and encouraging individuals to embrace their solitude and assert control over their personal space.”
A debut album from ALYXIS arrives in early 2024. A fuller artist statement below.
Sal Stapleton also had an exhibition in the Dublin Fringe called SVARA SEVEN – an interactive installation and exhibition created entirely from sustainably sourced materials.
ALYXIS
“As I envision XOIOXO, I draw inspiration from utopian visions of society where individuals are free to express themselves without judgement or societal constraints. In my mind’s eye, I am captivated by the imaginative landscapes and themes depicted in digital art and imaginary realms. Artists have a remarkable ability to transport us to fantastical worlds, and I find inspiration in their creative visions. From vibrant digital art to immersive virtual reality experiences, these forms of expression guide me in shaping the transformative and visually captivating aspects of XOIOXO.
My journey is further influenced by social movements and activism, which challenge societal norms and promote inclusivity. Movements like body positivity and LGBTQI+ activism inspire me to create a virtual world that fosters self-expression, body acceptance, gender fluidity, and a sense of belonging. XOIOXO becomes a platform where individuals can find solace, support, and liberation, just like real-world communities that prioritise creativity, personal growth, and self-expression.” Inspired by the potential of technology and exploration of virtual realities found in the science fiction world (Blade Runner, The Fifth Element, The Matrix), ALYXIS is recognising the potential for sanctuaries for dreamers in an increasingly angry and judgemental world. XOIOXO contains four different realms to explore, where you can find hidden music, messages and gifts from ALYXIS. Ultimately though, the hopes embedded within XOIOXO extend far beyond its digital borders. As dreamers reconnect with the physical realm, they carry with them the transformative energy and newfound perspectives nurtured within XOIOXO. Armed with a profound sense of self-love, acceptance, and empathy, they become catalysts for positive change, spreading these ideals into the world around them.
