The best tracks of the week
9. Hyphen Hyphen – ‘Just Need Your Love’
Big French energy as seen at Eurosonic.
There was very little let up from the word go with this French band’s set at Eurosonic. The Nice band’s music is all about high drama and big energy using pounding light-boxed drums, a lot of jumping around and in vocalist, Samanta Cotta, the kind of emotional range that like London Grammar’s Hannah Reid sounds like its swallowing the song.
‘Just Need Your Love’ is a towering rush of that euphoric energy that this band tap into frequently.
10. Cinema – ‘Time Traveller’
Debut album A Night Train to Budapest from the Irishman is released next month.
If there’s one thing that the music world is lacking, it’s female musicians and producers. That’s true in Dublin the same as it is anywhere. Sal Stapleton’s new single ‘Beg’ suggests we need much much more. The song’s chopped and screwed style is paired with a tense house-facing electronic production. There is enough wooziness in the production to detect a love of dance music’s underground in her style, reminiscent of Maya Jane Coles. Vocally, Stapleton has a Robyn-style whisper going on contributing to the “eerie, rhythmic pop” vibe.
