Nialler9 Podcast: A conversation with Denise Chaila, MuRli and God Knows

Avatar

Episode 102 of the Nialler9 Podcast and it’s one we’ve been trying to make happen for quite a while.

On this week’s episode, Niall and Andrea are joined by three very special guests.

Earlier this year, we had the Shannon rap legend God Knows on the podcast finally, but we always intended to gather together the crew and close cohorts around him, the rappers, producers and friends from the East Coast of Ireland.

What began publicly at least, with the emergence of God Knows and Murli became known along with MynameisJohn as Rusangano Family, the Choice Prize Winning Limerick-based rap trio whose work is some of the most exciting rap to come out of Ireland this century.

While the original group has been on hiatus, God Knows and Murli have been expending their creativity on music of their own and with close collaborators drawn from across Ireland and beyond.

2020 has been the year of the collaboration with God Knows bringing the South West All Stars and Murli building on his Intangibles mixtape from last year with ‘Til The Wheels Off’ and ‘The Culture’, all the while getting back behind the producing boards of others.

Most notably, Denise Chaila, who after a spoken word appearance on the most 2016 Rusangano Family record Let The Dead Bury The Dead, and a debut single ‘Copper Bullet / Duel Citizenship’ in 2019, has bloomed into a force, capital F, in 2020.

With her 2020 single ‘Chaila’, impacting Irish radio and playlists in a big way and with one hugely memorable and much-lauded online streamed show for Other Voices at the National Gallery of Ireland earlier this year, Denise has been growing in stature as an artist and as a public figure, and as our interview will make clear, she’s only getting started.

Myself – Niall – and Andrea sat down with these three inspirational music makers and peers for a near-two-hour chat in a Dublin hotel room recently that takes in a lot of topics including Dungeons and Dragons, Zoom Fatigue, Social media habits, crying at movies, The expectation of black artists to represent the black experience and much much more.

We hope you enjoy our chat as much as we did:
